An Ideal Treatment for Small & Mid-sized Cavities
Your teeth are covered in a hard, protective layer known as the enamel. When you eat, the bacteria in your mouth produce acid which attacks this protective layer. Over time, bacteria can eat holes in your teeth. These bacteria-filled holes are cavities. When cavities are left untreated, the bacteria can destroy the internal structure of your teeth.
When Teresa Salem, DMD finds a cavity in your teeth, she must clean out the wound and fill it to prevent future damage to the tooth. If you receive regular dental check-ups, most cavities will be found before they begin to cause you pain. These small or medium-sized cavities are best-filled with a tooth colored filling.
Advantages of Tooth Colored Fillings
Traditional fillings, called amalgam fillings, were made from a combination of metals. These fillings were very noticeable and required the dentist to remove healthy portions of the tooth to place them. In recent years, people have worried because amalgam fillings contain small amounts of mercury.
Composite resin fillings are mercury-free. They don’t require the dentist to remove healthy tissue, and they can be chosen to match the color of your tooth. They’re more difficult to place than amalgam fillings, but an experienced dentist like Dr. Salem has decades of experience with these strong, attractive dental fillings.
Filling a Cavity
When Dr. Salem fills a cavity with a tooth colored filling, she first administers a local anesthetic. This will help keep you comfortable during the procedure. She removes the diseased tissue with both electric and hand tools, and then cleans and dries the surface of your tooth. She uses acid to etch the tooth so that the filling is easier to attach, and then applies primer and adhesive. Once she’s placed the resin in the tooth, she hardens it with a blue light. If necessary, she can apply the filling in multiple layers.
When you leave the dental office, you can resume your normal routines. After a filling, pay careful attention to oral hygiene so that you can prevent future cavities.
