Take the Fear out of Dental Work
Are you afraid of the dentist? Do you skip appointments or avoid necessary treatments because of your fear and anxiety? You may understand that putting off dental work only makes the situation worse, but how can you overcome your fears? Dr. Teresa Salem has a solution to help you achieve your dental goals without anxiety. In her Holbrook, MA dental office, Dr. Salem offers oral sedation therapy for anxious patients.
How Oral Sedation Works
Before we can prescribe an oral sedation medication for you, we need to take your complete medical history. Your existing medical conditions, other medications, and degree of dental phobia will help us determine which medication to use for your appointment. Dr. Salem will prescribe the best medication or combination of medications for your particular circumstance.
When you arrive at the office, you can take your oral sedative, usually in a pill form. When the medicine has taken effect and you’re relaxed and happy, we can take you back to the chair and begin your procedure.
Oral sedatives aren’t just for surgeries and complicated procedures. You can take them for any appointment that triggers your anxiety. Some patients choose oral sedation even for routine cleanings and check-ups. The sedatives make it easier for patients with anxiety to receive routine care and prevent future problems.
Options for Oral Sedation Dentistry
Common oral sedation prescriptions include Valium®, Halcyon®, Sonata®, Ativan®, Vistaril®, Versed® and their generic forms. These drugs may even be covered by your dental or medical insurance. Most have only mild side effects. Many patients become so relaxed that they feel almost as if they’ve slept through their dental treatments, yet these drugs are safer than general anesthesia.
